通常如果學校係有後補位的話,都會在7月頭得到通知,有時臨到開學都會有人可以執雞架,
選校例(一)早有後著
家住慈雲山的張太(化名)，為兒子報讀了九龍塘一間小學，她坦言因為兒子「分數少」，沒
有太大把握，於是再報讀了一所直資及三所私立小學，以作後備。
其實兒子現正就讀的幼稚園亦設附屬小學，升讀該校小一機會頗大，為何仍報讀其他學校？
張太笑言，兵分三路有更多選擇機會：「試下嘛！多條後路！」
選校例(二)打定輸號兵分三路
張太坦言，約一年前，她已四處打聽學校的消息，又向朋友借閱學校資料等，做足工夫。
「個人檔案早已準備好，最近忙於面試，但很多都要在12月尾才有結果。」由於張太在首階
段所選的學交不在本區，因此若未能成功入讀，在統一派位都未必會選該校：「會視乎情
況，或者會選回本區的學校。」
選校例(三)集中火力
李太心儀北角區一所頗為著名的學校，並「集中火力」報讀此校，沒有報讀其他私立或直資
學校作後備。李太坦言，在女兒詠熹就讀幼稚園低班時，已為她升讀小一的事作準備。為了
與該校同屬一個校網，舉家約於一年前遷入北角區，她又曾帶同女兒一起視察環境，
「portfolio(個人檔案)等都已準備好，女兒也喜歡學校」。
第三階段叩門、自薦信和小孩子個人檔案
第三階段是指統一派位結果公佈後，一般程序是統一派位結果不理想或希望更上一層樓，家長往心儀的多間小學叩門，有些小學更會有系統地派發申請表，但此時的所有官津小學學位會被教統局‘凍結‘，亦即七月二日之前官津小學不能為叩門學生註冊，雖則或有小學進行面試等動作。故此統一派位結果公佈後，小學校長才開始面見叩門學生，家長如想讓心儀學校的校長有深刻記憶，應掌握寄信的時間，家長太早寄信，校長就算看了也忘記內容，太遲寄亦不好，建議家長在結果公佈數天內寄信，欲公佈後才寄，則愈早愈好，並且到校親自遞交。
小孩子個人檔案應最小包括自薦信，至於自薦信應以簡潔及整齊為原則，信件長度約一頁A4紙，如果書法好可手寫，否則電腦列印另加夫婦雙方親筆簽名，如選擇以英文為主的小學，當必撰寫英文信，此信是校長對家長的重要認知橋樑，實應慎而重之，不應流於全信抄襲。而在信中亦應留聯絡方法，可以是信內留最少兩個電話另加壹個巳貼郵票的回郵信封。
自薦信內容重點是儘量顯示家長選擇該學校的誠意，家長亦可參考小學概覽及學校網頁的資料，在信中‘顯示’自己對學校的認識和認同學校的教育理念，校長也希望家長的培育方式與學校一致，故家長可在信中提及自己管教兒女的方式，兒女有那方面的專長或天份，家長會如何有計劃地培育兒女，使孩子的天份得到發揮但仍顧及全人的發展，值得補充的是校方多看重全人的發展是孩子不是在家長的無時無刻呵護下成長，而是家長應放手讓孩子成長，只在應呵護時呵護，另外如同時夾附別人的推薦信，自薦信內亦應提及和推薦人的關係；此外家長本身如有專長，可試寫可為學校貢獻所長、可為學校做甚麼。
同時應提交小朋友的個人履歷，可讓校長多點瞭解小朋友，這些資料對校長極具參考作用，其內容除了孩子的個人履歷表(此履歷表亦向校長顯露家長的能力)外亦包括幼稚園各級成績表、曾參加的課內外活動資料、證書、獎狀，統一派位及自行收生的家長副本等，上述只需影印本，但若未能釘裝成書，可將各頁套入Clear Folder ，若可能的話，彩色影印更佳。但別人撰寫的推薦信、如神父等便要正本放在較前的位置，若推薦人份量十足，推薦信更應放在頭版。
